17 New Substances Added to the Most
Dangerous Cancer-Causers List:
The Six Keys to Help You Prevent Cancer
by SixWise.com
The government has added 17 new substances to its list of materials that
cause cancer in humans. In all, there are 58 substances on the list that
are likely to very likely causes of cancer in humans and 188 substances
that are "reasonably anticipated" to do so.
According to the American Cancer Society, U.S. men have a one in two
chance of developing cancer at some point in their lifetimes, while U.S.
women have a one in three chance. The majority of experts agree that
our modern-day environment is a major cause of cancer.
The list, the Department of Health and Human Services' Eleventh
Edition of the Report on Carcinogens, is updated every two years and serves
to identify potential hazards to human health. The report lists the following
factors as playing a major role in cancer development:
Environmental
factors, including toxins in the air, are serious contributors to
cancer rates in America. But the American Lung Association has found
that 87 percent of homeowners nationwide are not conscious of indoor
air pollutants! |
As air pollution inside the home is one of the fastest-growing causes
of disease, leading health organizations now strongly recommend you use
a high-quality air purifier in your home. Learn

- Things we eat, drink or smoke
- Substances in air, water and soil
- Natural and medical radiation
- Workplace exposures
- Drugs
- Infectious diseases
- Aging
- Genetic predisposition
Six new known carcinogens were added to the list, along with 11 substances
that can cause cancer. Among the six known carcinogens were Hepatitis
B and C, which can cause liver cancer, and several types of HPV, which
cause cervical cancer.
This was the first time viruses had been added to the list, and says
Elizabeth Ward, PhD, director of surveillance research for the American
Cancer Society, "These viruses are important causes of cancer."
Also added to the known carcinogens list were gamma radiation and X-rays,
which can cause leukemia and thyroid, breast, lung and other cancers.
The most common sources of exposure to this kind of radiation are medical
procedures and radon gas. http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/04/dec04/silentkillers.html
Among the 11 added substances that probably cause cancer are a host of
industrial chemicals including:
- Naphthalene (found in moth repellants)
- Cobalt sulfate
- Nitrobenzene
- Nitromethane
- 1-amino-2, 4-dibromoanthraquinone (dye ingredient)
- 4,4-thiodianiline (dye ingredient)
- Lead: Causes cancer of the kidney, brain and lung in animals
Diazoaminobenzene, another component of dyes, was also added to the list.
This chemical changes into benzene, which can cause cancer, in the human
body and causes genetic damage in animals. According to the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), this compound is found in the following dyes:
- D&C red no. 33
- FD&C yellow no. 5 (tartrazine)
- FD&C yellow no. 6
All of these dyes are permitted for use in drugs and cosmetics,
and the last two can be used in foods including jams, packaged macaroni
and cheese, orange colored cheeses, butter/margarine, breakfast cereals,
candy, ice cream, soda, yogurt and baked goods.

Heterocyclic anime compounds that are formed when meat is cooked
at high temperatures, such as charbroiling, were added to the list
of probable human carcinogens. Cooking by baking or poaching is
a healthier option.
|
The heterocyclic anime compounds MeIQ, MeIQx, and PhIP were also added
to the list of "reasonably anticipated" human carcinogens. These
compounds, which are not yet widely talked about in the public arena,
are formed when meat is cooked at high temperatures, such as when fried
or charbroiled. The compounds may increase the risk of colon cancer and
breast cancer in humans.
As a result, the American Cancer Society dietary guidelines recommend
cooking meat at low temperatures by baking, steaming or poaching instead
of frying or charbroiling.
Six Primary Keys to Fighting
Cancer
-
Avoid Tobacco Use
By now the extreme dangers of smoking should not come as news to anyone.
Lung cancer, whose number one cause is smoking, has the highest mortality
rate of all cancers for both men and women. In 2004, lung cancer caused
as many deaths in women as breast and all gynecologic cancers combined.

Increase Your Daily Intake of Cancer-Fighting
Foods
Increase your intake of vegetables and fruits (don't overdo certain
fruits, though, due to their high sugar content ... berries are
a great choice due to lower sugar content while being rich in antioxidants.)
Among their myriad other nutritional properties, vegetables and fruits
are the primary source for antioxidants. At the molecular and cellular
levels, antioxidants deactivate certain particles called free radicals
that are among the leading underlying causes of cancer.
If, like over 85% of Americans, you are not consuming an adequate
amount of produce -- or if you want added extra antioxidant protection
-- one of the wisest steps you can take is to add a pure, whole
food supplement rich in antioxidants to your diet.
The strongest recommendation we can possibly
make in this area is to add Fruits
of Life -- Potent Cellular Protection to your diet. Used
by many of today's leading health experts, it is the first and
only product to contain the top four antioxidant foods on the planet
in one whole food powder blend! (This is based on an Oxygen
Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORC) test performed at Tufts University.)
This important supplement also contains alkalinizing minerals from
goat's milk and is exceptional at helping your body maintain a proper
pH level. Your body has an ideal pH level, or balance of acid and
alkaline, but due to years of poor dieting, most American's bodies
are far too acidic. Studies have shown this excess acidity can also
contribute to cancer (and osteoporosis and arthritis.) If you are

-
Avoid Unhealthy, Cancer-Causing Foods
Many experts have stated that trans-fats are just as or even more
dangerous than tobacco. While food manufacturers are not required
by the U.S. to list trans-fats on food labels until January 2006,
fortunately many are. Avoid foods with trans fats. Avoid over-consumption
of alcohol. Also eliminate artificial sweeteners and processed foods,
and work toward drastically reducing sugars. As noted above, avoid
charring and frying meats and other foods altogether.
Finally, if you consume meats try to consume only natural, pasture-raised.
Among their many other health risks, mass-produced meats are higher
in omega-6 fats that Americans consume far too many of and that can
also lead to cancer. Read The Meat You Eat: How Corporate Farming
Has Endangered America's Food Supply for more information.
-
Dramatically Reduce Exposure to Toxins --
Especially in Your Home
Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, and the numbers are not
too far off for those in other Western Hemisphere countries. While
much has been made of pollution outside, when it comes to your health,
it is indoor pollution you should be concerned about: indoor air
is 2-5 times more likely to be polluted than the air outside!
There are two keys to dramatically reducing the toxins in your home
(and offices) to levels your body is equipped to handle (levels are
way higher than that in most homes now, as you will read in the articles
linked to below):
A) Throw Away Your Cleaning Tools and Use What Hospitals Use!
"Dirt" and the dust it turns into your home is generally
composed of about twenty "ingredients," and many of them
are toxic. You are urged to read the article, Dust Dangers: What
Exactly is Dust, and Why Can it be so Dangerous?, to learn those
ingredients and what you should do in more detail.
To properly rid your home of this dust and dirt, please throw away
the cotton mops, sponges, cotton rags and common household cleaning
solutions like Pine-Sol and you may be using immediately! Recent
studies have shown that conventional mops, sponges and rags are
some of the most abundant sources of germs in your home, and they
are far better at spreading dirt and dust around than removing it.
Chemical cleaners, meanwhile, are primary sources of phenols that
can cause respiratory, cardiac and other bodily damage -- read
The
Health Dangers of Phenols Found in Common Household Cleaners.
For reasons above, hospital, other healthcare organizations, top
hotel chains and many other organizations have moved away from "conventional"
cleaning tools and supplies and moved to using PerfectClean "ultramicrofiber"
cleaning tools. The PerfectClean line of ultramicrofiber
mops, dusters, towels and wipes is one of the absolute "must"
products (just recently available to the public) that we urge everyone
to consider, and you can read
more about PerfectClean here ... and see
the entire PerfectClean line (including the special introductory
prices) here.
B) Use a High-Quality "Photocatalysis" Air Purifier
in Your Home!
As air pollution inside the home is one of the fastest-growing causes
of disease, leading health organizations now strongly recommend you
use a high-quality air purifier in your home. You have to be careful,
though, of which air purifier you choose, as many of the most popular
brands can be highly inneffective. You
can learn about THE most highly recommended system that uses "photocatalysis"
technology -- the Pionair -- and see an animated demonstration
and comparison chart versus other types of models now.

Exercise and Maintain a Healthy Weight
Multiple studies have shown that maintaining a healthy weight and
exercising regularly help to prevent cancer. Overweight and obesity
are serious risk factors for cancer of the colon, breasts, prostate,
ovaries, rectum and uterus. Exercise is key to helping you avoid and
overcome overweight and obesity. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes
per day. If you are just (re)starting with exercise after a long period
without it, consult your physician -- you will likely be advised
to start with a moderate, low-impact activity such as walking, and
to gradually work your way up to more aggressive activity.

Don't Get too Much -- OR Too Little
-- Sun
Most people have heard that getting too much sun (i.e., too many UV
rays) is harmful and can cause skin cancer. It is true that too much
sun can lead to cancer, and you should not stay out long enough to
get burned. BUT -- due to the extreme fear of the sun incited
by all the warnings -- an even more prominent danger now is that
Americans are not getting enough sun ... with dire consequences
to their health!
The sun is by far human beings' primary source of vitamin D, and
now due to our "sun phobia," vitamin D deficiency is one of
the most unknown health epidemics affecting us. And guess what this
severe deficiency in vitamin D can lead to? If you guess cancer, you
are right.
Meanwhile, recent studies have shown that adequate sun exposure can
actually reduce the risk of developing certain cancers by 30-40%!

The key is to:
A) Try to get at least 15 minutes of "healthy" sun per
day. If you have been hiding from the sun, initially start by getting
just five minutes of sun per day and working your way up to more gradually.
B) Minimize exposure when the sun's ultraviolet rays are strongest,
between approximately 11am and 2pm (sun exposure before 10am or after
4pm is ultimately the best).
C) Use a safe sunblock, long-sleeve clothing, and sun glasses if
you have to be outside during peak U.V. hours
D) If your vitamin D levels are low like most Americans, consume
a pure, digestible and high-quality form of vitamin D like the Icelandic
Olde World Cod Liver Oil we highly recommend.
