Detailed Description

Did you know that 1 in 15 homes in the U.S. are polluted with radon, the #2 cause of lung cancer?

Every major health organization strongly urges you to test your home for radon, and as you'll see below this official home-testing kit is easy to use and economical… so please don't wait to get your home tested!

What is Radon?

Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas that's formed naturally through the radioactive breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water beneath your home, and also found in well water and building materials. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nearly one out of every 15 U.S. homes is estimated to have elevated radon levels.

Why is Radon so Risky?

One of the reasons why radon poses such a great threat is that it cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. In other words, there is no way to know, using your five senses, that radon is leaking into your home.

When you breathe in air that contains high levels of radon, it can cause lung cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the Surgeon General, and it's thought to be responsible for thousands of deaths every year.

There is only one greater cause of lung cancer in the United States, and that's smoking. For this reason, people who smoke and live in homes with high radon levels are especially at risk from radon.

The EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General recommend that every home get tested below the third floor. Testing is the ONLY way to determine if radon is in your home because it can't be smelled, tasted or seen!

Where Does Radon Come From?

When uranium in soil, rock and water breaks down radioactively, radon is produced. Radon gets into the air you breathe and can be found in any type of building, including homes, schools and offices. Because you likely spend the majority of time in your home, high levels of home radon represent your greatest risk.

Aside from soil, radon can also be present in well water and, in limited cases, building materials. The gas can seep through cracks in floors and walls and gaps around pipes.

How Radon Gets Into Your Home

The EPA notes seven ways that toxic radon gas can seep into your home:

  1. Cracks in solid floors
  2. Construction joints
  3. Cracks in walls
  4. Gaps in suspended floors
  5. Gaps around service pipes
  6. Cavities inside walls
  7. The water supply

How Does Radon Affect the Body?

Radon gas causes no immediate symptoms, which is one reason why it's so deadly. You could be exposed to radon and not know it until damage had already been done. However, over time, sometimes many years, breathing in radon gas can damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer. This happens because the radioactive radon particles get trapped in your lungs and break down further, releasing bursts of energy that can lead to cancer.

In fact, based on the EPA's Assessment of Risk for Radon in Homes, indoor air that contains radon is thought to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States. Typically, lung cancer would appear some five to 25 years after radon exposure, though not everyone who's exposed will develop cancer.

Smokers are most at risk for developing cancer from radon exposure, and studies have shown that quitting smoking and lowering your exposure to radon can reduce the risk of lung cancer. Children may also be at a higher risk, although studies on this issue have not been entirely conclusive.

How to Detect Radon in Your Home

Since radon can't be seen, tasted or smelled, the only way to find out if your home has unsafe levels is with a radon test.

That's why the EPA and the Surgeon General recommend that all homes be tested for radon below the third floor (schools should also be tested).

This EPA-recommended Home Radon Test Kit is economical, extremely easy to perform and reliable, and well worth your minimal time and money investment!
