Carpet Cleaners: Poisoning the Air Inside Your Home
Most of us are concerned about the environment, but when it comes to the environment
in our own home, we often choose products that are harmful to our families and
ourselves. The quality of the air that we breathe is often overlooked. This
is potentially extremely hazardous to our health when you take into account
that an EPA survey concluded that indoor air was 3 to 70 times more polluted
than outdoor air.
Cleaning products release toxic vapors into the air when they are used and
even when they are stored. Children are particularly vulnerable to these chemical
fumes because they inhale more air per pound of body weight than adults. Pollutants
are generally heavier than air and collect closer to the floor, putting small
children at even greater risk than adults.
Consider these staggering facts:
-
More children under the age of four die of accidental poisonings at home
than are accidentally killed with guns at home.
-
150 commonly found household chemicals have been linked to allergies, birth
defects, cancer and psychological abnormalities.
-
In 1983, a research team at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, studied
the relation between indoor air pollution and sudden infant death syndrome
(SIDS) and discovered that SIDS is higher in the winter because of decreased
ventilation.
-
We spend 90% of our time indoor, and 65% of our time at home. Moms, infants
and the elderly spend 90% of their time in the home.
-
National Cancer Association released results of a 15-year study concluding
that women who work in the home are at a 54% higher risk of developing cancer
than women who work outside the home.
-
An EPA study stated that the toxic chemicals in household cleaners are
3 times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air.
-
Houses being built today are so energy efficient that "outgassing"
of chemicals has nowhere to go, causing it to build up inside the home.
Toxins Found in Most Carpet Cleaners
It is important to note that many toxins lurk inside your carpet. You might
be surprised to learn that some older carpets can literally contain pounds of
dust mites, dirt, pesticides and other toxins brought in on shoes, feet and
pet's paws. However, while it is necessary to clean your carpet from these allergens
and toxic dust, you should not have to put your health at even greater risk
in the process.
Like other cleaning agents, carpet cleaners contain known cancer causing agents
and many other harsh components linked with various ailments and disorders.
Although probably not listed on the label, in general, you are likely to
find the following health jeopardizing chemicals in most carpet cleaners:
-
Perchloroethylene - A known human carcinogen which can have immediate
central nervous system (CNS) effects including dizziness, sleepiness, nausea,
tremors and disorientation as well as long-term CNS effects.
-
Ethanol - Defined as a hazardous waste by the EPA, exposure symptoms
include fatigue, eyes and upper respiratory tract irritation (even in low
concentrations). Inhalation of ethanol vapors can have effects similar to
those of ingestion and can cause CNS disorders.
-
Napthalene -- Described by the Condensed Chemical Dictionary as
"toxic by inhalation".
-
Butyl cellosolve - A central nervous system toxin.
-
Monoethanolamine - Linked to liver, kidney and reproductive damage
as well as depressionof the central nervous system, inhaling high concentrations
may cause dizziness and even coma.
-
Propylene glycol methyl ether - An eye, skin and respiratory irritant.
-
1,4-dioxane -- A known carcinogen.
-
Ammonia and potentially harmful fragrances - in areas where there
is a large quantity of carpet, the amount of chemicals released from carpet
cleaners and deodorizers can be considerable.

Helpful Tips to Choose a REAL "Green" Cleaner
There are a number of cleaning products available today
that claim to be green -- meaning healthier for you and the environment.
Here are some points to consider that will help you determine if the product
is really green:
-
Look for warning words like "Poison" and
"Danger" - Sometimes these words do refer to serious hazards,
or they may simply be common sense statements based on the fact that
even some natural ingredients can be harmful in large doses.
-
Ingredients should be listed clearly on the label.
Be suspicious of products that don't appear to offer full disclosure
of all the ingredients they contain.
-
When a product uses the term biodegradable - does
that mean in 5 days or 5 years?

Carpet Cleaner Waste -- The Environment's Enemy
We also need to account for the damage to the environment when carpet cleaner
wastewater is disposed. Many chemicals currently used are highly alkaline and
aggressive enzymes and disinfectants that if used or managed improperly will
cause serious damage to the environment.
EnviroRite uses renewable resources whenever possible in manufacturing products,
the vegetable-based raw materials are enhanced with other safe ingredients that
are combined to create ultra safe, yet powerful cleaners. Plus, EnviroRite cleaners
are "green" cleaners -- meaning they won't harm the environment.
Don't buy into the misconception that earth-friendly, and user-safe means less
effective products at double the price of national brands. When first introduced,
alternative cleaning products were not as effective as their petrochemical counterparts.
But many years have passed, and health conscious companies like EnviroRite have
done their homework - independently testing their products to ensure that they
are not only user safe and environmentally responsible -- but just as effective
without the added harsh chemicals!
