How Most Laundry Detergents Can Harm You and the Environment
When it comes to health, safety and the environment more consumers are becoming
much more savvy in their purchases of household cleaners and detergents. Unfortunately,
it can be difficult for even the most informed consumers to find out just what
ingredients are in certain products, and how they might impact the environment.
You will hardly find a complete list of ingredients on the labels of most commercial
laundry detergents available today. And, like us, you are probably wondering
why. To start, companies are not required by law to list their ingredients,
and they claim that their formulations are confidential. Secondly, the ingredients
they use are subject to change - sometimes due to reformulation or the use of
alternative ingredients to reduce costs.
Be we can tell you what we do know about most laundry detergents -- they contain
artificial fragrances and compounds made from petroleum. Many do not degrade
in the environment, and may have toxic effects on both fish and mammals. Additionally,
they often can cause allergies and skin or eye irritation.
Here's a list of ingredients commonly used in the leading brands, along with
a description of how they impact you and environment. We must warn you, what
you are about to read is rather alarming.
-
EDTA (ethylene-diamino-tetra-acetate) - A class of synthetic, phosphate-alternative
compounds used to reduce calcium and magnesium hardness in water. EDTA is
used to prevent bleaching agents from becoming active before they're immersed
in water and as a foaming stabilizer. EDTA does not readily biodegrade and
once introduced into the general environment can re-dissolve toxic heavy
metals trapped in underwater sediments, allowing them to re-enter and re-circulate
in the food chain.
-
Optical brighteners - A broad classification of many different synthetic
chemicals that, when applied to clothing, convert UV light wavelengths to
visible light, thus making laundered clothes appear "whiter."
Their inclusion in any formula does not enhance or affect the product's
performance in any way; they simply function as an optical illusion to trick
the eye. Optical brighteners do not readily biodegrade, are toxic to fish
when washed into the general environment and can create bacterial mutations.
They can cause allergic reaction when in contact with skin that is then
exposed to sunlight.
-
Petroleum distillates (also naphthas) - A broad category encompassing
almost every type of chemical obtained directly from the petroleum refining
process. Any ingredient listed as a "petroleum distillate" or
"naphtha" is firstly a synthetic, and secondly, likely to cause
detrimental health or environmental effects.
-
Polycarboxylates -- Petroleum based -- not biodegradable and similar
in chemical structure to certain plastics and acrylic compounds. Because
they are relatively new synthetic phosphate substitutes, their effects on
human and environmental health remain largely unknown. Tests show they are
non-toxic, and do not and generally settle out with the sludge during water
treatment, until further study, use of this ingredient is not recommended.
-
Polyethylene glycol (also PEG) - An anti-redeposition agent, PEG
is a polymer made from ethylene oxide and is similar to some non-ionic detergents.
While not generally considered toxic, large doses are lethal to animals.
PEG is slow to degrade and is synthetic.

Helpful Tips to Choose a REAL "Green" Cleaner
There are a number of cleaning products available today
that claim to be green -- meaning healthier for you and the environment.
Here are some points to consider that will help you determine if the product
is really green:
-
Look for warning words like "Poison" and
"Danger" - Sometimes these words do refer to serious hazards,
or they may simply be common sense statements based on the fact that
even some natural ingredients can be harmful in large doses.
-
Ingredients should be listed clearly on the label.
Be suspicious of products that don't appear to offer full disclosure
of all the ingredients they contain.
-
When a product uses the term biodegradable - does
that mean in 5 days or 5 years?
|
Don't buy into the misconception that earth-friendly, and user-safe means less
effective products at double the price of national brands. When first introduced,
alternative cleaning products were not as effective as their petrochemical counterparts.
But many years have passed, and health conscious companies like EnviroRite have
done their homework - independently testing their products to ensure that they
are not only user safe and environmentally responsible -- but just as effective
without the dangerous chemicals!
